    THE LAUNCH PROGRAMME

    KEYNOTE ADDRESS BY CITY OF JOBURG MMC NONHLANLA SIFUMBA

    10 September 2019, Johannesburg

    “At the James and Ethel Gray Park where Private and Public Partnerships are working wonders for the well-being of the park and the community.  Heartfelt gratitude to all parties involved in this initiative

    “The limitations of the City with regards to resources are no secret – we are clear in the understanding that we cannot achieve greatness and excellent service delivery without the help of key partners.

    In an effort to answer the call by government to the Private Sector, NGO’s and individuals to work together towards doing more for the Citizens of the City of Johannesburg - and in light of existing resource constraints, the Birdhaven Rate Payers Association, the Melrose North Residents and AMDEC (the Melrose Arch Management company) joined forces to establish the James and Ethel Gray Park Foundation for the purpose of partnering with JCPZ through the adoption of the James and Ethel Gray Park.

    The parties in union have pledged to work together towards uplifting the face of the JEG Park in the interest of the broader community.

    The project will see the implementation of improvements that will help bring about better safety and security, enhanced park aesthetics, by-law awareness and compliance including proper park usage.

    The Foundation will be fundraising towards improving the parks’ infrastructure, upkeep and protection through:

    The installation of a ClearVu Fence worth R4 million;

    • The provision of Regular Park patrols, which are intended to promote frequent visits by citizens and tourists;

    • Regular park clean-ups, grass cutting, litter cleaning and waste removal that will augment JCPZ’s scheduled maintenance; and

    • By-law enforcement in conjunction with JMPD.”

    MESSAGE FROM YUSUF ABRAMJEE, SOCIAL ACTIVIST

    Well done to our citizens who have taken the lead and turned this park into something we can be proud of.

    We need to promote the concept of active citizenry to every corner of our city and the country.

    Many parks have become havens for criminals. We have to take ownership and clean up our areas.

    I salute all those who have invested time and money into this project. Thank you for leading. You are indeed making a great difference.

    Yes. It’s the responsibility of the city to maintain and upkeep our public spaces. But we all know they are over stretched and often don’t have the resources.

    That’s why it’s important for corporates, residents and ordinary citizens to stand up and make a difference
